Policy on the use of artificial intelligence

The attitude of peer-reviewed scientific journals on medicine and related fields to the use of artificial intelligence (ai) in science, specifically in the creation of scientific article manuscripts by one or more authors

General Definitions
Any activity (human activity) is characterized by the influence of the subject on the object, with the goal and plan being defined.
The subject (person) carries out an activity aimed at transforming the object. In this case, the subject is affectef by a motive (the need to carry out the activity). The following are then formulated:

Goal: What is the desired result of the activity?
Means: With what tools does the activity occur?
Actions: What steps does the subject take?
Result: What happens after the actions are completed?

Labor is a type of human activity aimed at creating material and spiritual values. A person uses various means of labor—devices and mechanisms. In the process of labor, a person is active and expends strength and energy.
Mental work is a mental activity, the product of which is information formatted in a certain way. Creative work is not inherent to every worker; it depends on the level of education and qualifications, as well as the ability to innovate.

Recommendations
To facilitate their work (editing text, searching for additional sources of literature, collecting and analyzing data), authors or a team of authors use various tools, ranging from writing instruments and computers to AI-based software.

The use of AI tools relates to the means of labor but does not replace the creative work of the authors. The generally recognized criteria for authorship of articles in medicine and related specialties include four fundamental aspects:

  1. Development of the concept and design or analysis and interpretation of data.
  2. Justification of the manuscript or verification of critical intellectual content.
  3. Final approval for publication.
  4. Agreement to be responsible for all aspects of the manuscript.

AI cannot be the author of a scientific article manuscript, as it is merely a tool for the authors and does not participate in the activities mentioned above.

The editors of the journal do not consider basic tools for checking grammar, spelling, or references to cited works as generative AI. Authors are not allowed to use large language models, generative chatbots, or machine learning methods to create clinical or diagnostic images.

Thus, AI capabilities can be used when creating a scientific article manuscript by one author or a group of authors only as a labor tool. In this case, in the "Materials and Methods" section, authors must specify the specific generative AI technology used, along with an https address or other identifying information.

At the same time, chatbots such as ChatGPT (and similar ones) cannot, under any circumstances, be indicated as the article’s author or as a person who contributed to the preparation of the manuscript. It should also be noted that chatbots often transmit false information, which requires additional verification.
